Early Life and Education
Hylke Dijkstra was born in the Netherlands in 1957. He earned his medical degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1983 and later specialized in public health and tropical medicine. Dr. Dijkstra's deep passion for global health was ignited during his early work in refugee camps in Southeast Asia.

In 2009, Dr. Dijkstra became the Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM). Under his leadership, the GFATM expanded its reach and impact, providing funding and technical assistance to countries affected by these deadly diseases.
Dr. Dijkstra's commitment to global health and human rights extends beyond his work with international organizations. He is also a member of the Global Commission on Health and Climate Change, a group of experts appointed by the World Health Organization and the Lancet Commission on Health and Climate Change.
In 2020, Dr. Dijkstra was appointed as the Special Envoy for Health Systems Strengthening at the World Health Organization. In this role, he continues to provide strategic guidance to countries on how to build resilient and equitable health systems.
