A Life Dedicated to Uplifting Others

Nitrina Rosanna Maria Ingram, affectionately known as "Miss Nittie," emerged as one of Jamaica's most influential social workers and educators in the 20th century. Her unwavering dedication to women's education, children's welfare, and social justice left an indelible mark on Jamaican society and beyond.

Born in 1875, Miss Nittie was the daughter of Rev. Joshua Ingram and his wife, Mary Ann. From a young age, she exhibited a keen intellect and a compassionate heart, traits that would shape her life's work.

Education as a Catalyst for Empowerment

Miss Nittie's belief in the transformative power of education propelled her to establish Alpha Academy in 1899. This school, located in Kingston, Jamaica, provided educational opportunities for underprivileged girls. She envisioned Alpha Academy as a place where young women could acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to break the cycle of poverty and contribute meaningfully to society.

Miss Nittie's commitment to women's empowerment extended beyond Alpha Academy. She served as a member of the Wolmer's Trust, a charitable organization that provided scholarships to academically gifted students. Through her involvement, she ensured that countless young women had the opportunity to pursue higher education.

Championing Children's Welfare

Miss Nittie's compassion for children knew no bounds. In 1922, she became a founding member of the Jamaica Social Welfare Commission, an organization dedicated to promoting the well-being of Jamaican children. As a member of the commission, she played a pivotal role in establishing children's homes, health clinics, and other essential services.

Miss Nittie also served as the first matron of Westwood High School, a boarding school for girls in Trelawny, Jamaica. Under her leadership, Westwood High School became renowned for its academic excellence and its commitment to the holistic development of its students.

Legacy of Service

Beyond her work in education and social welfare, Miss Nittie made significant contributions to other areas of Jamaican society. She was a founding member of the YWCA of Jamaica and served as its president for many years. She was also a vocal advocate for women's suffrage and was instrumental in the establishment of the Kingston Public Hospital's Women's Clinic.

Miss Nittie's unwavering dedication to the betterment of Jamaica earned her numerous accolades. In 1953, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to education. She also received honorary degrees from the University of the West Indies and the University of London.

An Enduring Legacy

Nitrina Rosanna Maria Ingram's life and work serve as an enduring testament to the transformative power of one person's unwavering commitment to making a difference. Her legacy continues to inspire countless individuals to embrace the values of education, compassion, and social justice.

Miss Nittie's contributions to women's education, children's welfare, and social progress have left an indelible mark on Jamaican society and beyond. Her name will forever be remembered as a symbol of hope, resilience, and unwavering determination to uplift others.
