Nikos Kazantzakis's Zorba the Greek is a novel that is considered one of the greatest works of modern Greek literature. The novel has been translated into over 30 languages and has been adapted into several films, including the Academy Award-winning film Zorba the Greek (1964).

Plot

The novel is set in Crete in the early 20th century. The narrator, a young Greek intellectual, arrives on the island to work as a teacher. He soon meets Zorba, a Cretan peasant who is full of life and energy. Zorba is a free spirit who lives for the moment and is not afraid to take risks. The narrator is drawn to Zorba's joie de vivre and becomes his friend.

Together, the narrator and Zorba embark on a series of adventures. They travel to the mountains, where they meet a group of shepherds. They visit a monastery, where they learn about the Orthodox Church. And they go to a wedding, where they dance and sing and celebrate life.

But Zorba's free spirit is not always appreciated by everyone. The villagers are suspicious of him, and the authorities view him as a troublemaker. Zorba is eventually arrested and imprisoned, but he manages to escape and return to Crete.

The novel ends with Zorba's death. The narrator is heartbroken, but he knows that Zorba will always be with him in spirit.
