Spain: A Dictatorship on the Brink

For nearly three decades, Spain had been under the iron grip of General Francisco Franco. His regime was characterized by censorship, repression, and economic stagnation. However, by the early 1960s, cracks were beginning to show in Franco's ironclad rule.

The economy was slowly recovering from the devastation of the Spanish Civil War, and a new generation of Spaniards, eager for change, was coming of age. Inspired by youth movements in other parts of Europe, they began to challenge the status quo.

Portugal: Salazar's Last Stand

To the west of Spain, Portugal was also under the yoke of a repressive dictatorship. António Salazar had ruled the country with an iron fist since the early 1930s. Like Franco's Spain, Portugal was isolated from the rest of Europe and its economy was stagnant.

However, the 1960s brought about a wave of unrest in Portugal. The country's involvement in colonial wars in Africa and a growing awareness of the economic and social disparities within the country fueled public discontent.

In 1968, Salazar was forced to resign due to ill health and was replaced by Marcello Caetano. Caetano attempted to introduce some reforms, but it was too little, too late. The forces of change were unstoppable.

In 1974, a group of leftist military officers overthrew Caetano's regime in a bloodless coup. The revolution was met with widespread popular support, and Portugal embarked on a path towards democracy.

A Time of Cultural Exchange

The 1960s were not only a time of political upheaval but also a period of great cultural exchange between Spain and Portugal. Artists, writers, and musicians from both countries found inspiration in each other's traditions and collaborated on groundbreaking works.

One of the most famous examples of this cultural exchange was the collaboration between the Spanish director Luis Buñuel and the Portuguese writer José Saramago. Together, they created the controversial film "Viridiana" (1961),which was banned in Spain but went on to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Another example is the work of the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Influenced by the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, Siza Vieira designed some of the most iconic buildings in Portugal, including the Museum of Modern Art in Serralves.

The cultural exchange between Spain and Portugal continued throughout the 1960s and beyond, enriching the artistic and intellectual landscapes of both countries.
