Lavinia Ursula Le Guin was born on October 21, 1929, in Berkeley, California. Her father was Alfred Kroeber, a renowned anthropologist, and her mother was Theodora Kroeber, an author and folklorist. Le Guin attended Radcliffe College, where she studied French literature and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1951.
