The Swede Denver Rebels are a junior ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado. The team is a member of the Western States Hockey League (WSHL) and plays its home games at the Denver Coliseum. History
The Swede Denver Rebels were founded in 1998 as a member of the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League (RMJHL). The team was originally known as the Colorado Thunderbirds, but changed its name to the Rebels in 2001. The Rebels joined the WSHL in 2003 and quickly became one of the league's top teams. The team won its first WSHL championship in 2006 and has since won two more titles in 2013 and 2016.
In addition to their success in the WSHL, the Rebels have also had success at the national level. The team won the National Championship in 2013 and has also finished as the runner-up twice.
Players
The Swede Denver Rebels have had a number of notable players over the years, including:
- Patrick Kane - Kane is a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks. He was drafted by the Blackhawks in the first round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and has since become one of the league's top players.
- Seth Jones - Jones is a two-time NHL All-Star with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was drafted by the Nashville Predators in the fourth round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and has since become one of the league's top defensemen.
- Clayton Keller - Keller is a two-time NHL All-Rookie Team selection with the Arizona Coyotes. He was drafted by the Coyotes in the first round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and has since become one of the league's top young players.
Coaches
The Swede Denver Rebels have had a number of successful coaches over the years, including:
- Joe Sakic - Sakic is a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Colorado Avalanche. He was hired as the Rebels' head coach in 2013 and led the team to the National Championship in his first season.
- Patrick Roy - Roy is a four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche. He was hired as the Rebels' head coach in 2015 and led the team to the WSHL championship in his first season.
- Jared Bednar - Bednar is a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Colorado Avalanche. He was hired as the Rebels' head coach in 2017 and led the team to the WSHL championship in his first season.
