Early Life and Career
Dennis Edwards was born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 3, 1946. He began singing in church at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was performing in local talent shows. In 1964, Edwards joined the Temptations, replacing David Ruffin as the lead vocalist. The Temptations were one of the most successful groups of the Motown era, and Edwards's vocals helped to make them one of the most popular bands in the world.
The Temptations
The Temptations were formed in Detroit in 1960. The original lineup included Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, and David Ruffin. The group's first single, "The Way You Do the Things You Do," was a hit, and the Temptations went on to release a string of successful singles, including "My Girl," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone." Edwards joined the group in 1964, replacing Ruffin as the lead vocalist. Edwards's powerful voice and soulful delivery helped the Temptations to continue their success.
Edwards's Solo Career
In 1977, Edwards left the Temptations to pursue a solo career. He released his first solo album, "Don't Look Any Further," in 1978. Edwards also had a successful career as a session singer, recording with artists such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson.
