Offsides The Originals: A Comprehensive History of the Seattle Steelheads
The Seattle Steelheads are a professional hockey team based in Seattle, Washington. They are a member of the Western Conference of the ECHL. Early Years (1998-2002)
The Seattle Steelheads were founded in 1998 as an expansion team in the ECHL. They played their first season in 1998-99 and finished with a record of 35-33-8. The following season, they improved to 45-24-7 and made their first appearance in the playoffs.
In 2000-01, the Steelheads won their first Pacific Division title with a record of 50-20-6. They advanced to the second round of the playoffs, where they lost to the Alaska Aces. The following season, they finished with a record of 47-25-4 and made it to the third round of the playoffs, where they lost to the South Carolina Stingrays.
Kelly Cup Championships (2003-2009)
The Seattle Steelheads won their first Kelly Cup in 2005. They defeated the Alaska Aces 4-1 in the best-of-seven series. The following season, they repeated as champions, defeating the Victoria Salmon Kings 4-2 in the best-of-seven series.
The Steelheads made it to the Kelly Cup Finals again in 2009, but they lost to the South Carolina Stingrays 4-2 in the best-of-seven series.
Recent Years (2010-Present)
The Seattle Steelheads have continued to be a competitive team in the ECHL in recent years. They have made the playoffs in each of the past 10 seasons and have won two division titles.
In 2017, the Steelheads were sold to a new ownership group. The new owners have invested heavily in the team and have made several improvements to the accesso ShoWare Center, the team's home arena.
The Steelheads are currently led by head coach Greg Frates. He is in his second season with the team and has led them to a record of 35-23-5. The Steelheads are currently in second place in the Pacific Division and are in contention for a playoff spot.
